The astronauts left behind a number of instruments they had used; a silicon disk that contained goodwill messages from Presidents Eisenhower, Kennedy, Johnson and Nixon, plus 73 Leaders of Countries from around the world; and a gold olive branch to represent peace. After re-joining the mother ship, Columbia, the three astronauts left the Moon’s orbit and safely returned to Earth on July 24th.
